Pokémon, a global media powerhouse and Nintendo mainstay since the Game Boy era, boasts hundreds of captivating creatures—collectible in games and trading cards alike. Each generation introduces a fresh wave of Pokémon to discover, and the Nintendo Switch is no exception, boasting a diverse lineup of titles. With the Nintendo Switch 2's confirmed backward compatibility, you can confidently purchase existing Switch Pokémon games, knowing they'll be playable on the new console.
Below, we detail every Pokémon game released on the Nintendo Switch, along with what we know about upcoming releases on the Switch 2.
How Many Pokémon Games Are on Nintendo Switch?
A total of 12 Pokémon games have graced the Nintendo Switch. This includes mainline entries from generations 8 and 9, plus numerous spin-offs. For this list, we've counted dual-version mainline releases as single entries and excluded titles available via Nintendo Switch Online (see that list below).
Note: 2024 marked a break in new Pokémon game releases—over a year since the last release and two years since the last mainline title. The Pokémon Company instead launched *Pokémon TCG Pocket*, a hugely successful free card app (not included here as it's not a Switch title).
Which Pokémon Game Should You Play in 2024?
For a 2024 Switch Pokémon recommendation, we suggest Pokémon Legends: Arceus. While it deviates from classic Pokémon gameplay, it offers a refreshing open-world experience, enhanced action-RPG elements, greater control over encounters, and polished handheld gameplay.
