Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is slated for release in theaters on March 2027, according to Variety. Paramount has penciled in the upcoming Sonic movie for March 19, giving fans two years to anticipate the return of the blue hedgehog. Beyond the release date, no additional details about the next installment have been disclosed.
This announcement comes on the heels of Sonic the Hedgehog 3's impressive performance, earning $218 million domestically and over $420 million globally. This makes it the highest-grossing film in the Sonic franchise, surpassing its predecessor, which grossed $148 million. The success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is particularly noteworthy considering the initial controversy surrounding the original character design, which underwent significant revisions during post-production.
Additionally, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ranks as the second-highest-grossing video game movie of all time in North America, trailing only the animated Super Mario Bros. movie. This continues the friendly rivalry between Nintendo and Sega on the big screen.
The live-action Sonic franchise has seen steady growth since its inception, now encompassing three feature films and a Knuckles-themed streaming TV series. Based on the popular Sega video game franchise, each film follows Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) as he faces off against his nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (played by Jim Carrey). Each new film expands the cast, introducing characters such as Tails (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey), Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba), and Shadow the Hedgehog (voiced by Keanu Reeves).
