This classic card game uses a standard 52-card deck plus one joker. The number of cards dealt depends on the number of players: 13 cards for two-player games, and 7 cards for three- or four-player games.
The objective is to score points by forming sets (cards of the same rank) and sequences (consecutive cards of the same suit), laying them on the table. The joker acts as a wild card. Points are awarded for melds (sets and sequences) and for laying off cards onto existing melds. Numbered cards (2-10) are worth their face value, face cards (J, Q, K) are worth 10 points each, Aces are worth 15 points, and the joker's value is determined by the card it replaces in a meld.
Gameplay unfolds in rounds. A player's turn begins by drawing a card from either the stockpile or the discard pile (but they cannot discard the same card immediately if drawn from the discard pile). Players can draw multiple cards from the discard pile. The round ends when a player runs out of cards. The player's score is calculated by adding the points of their melds and laid-off cards, then subtracting the points of any unmelded cards remaining in their hand. The player with the highest score wins the round.
The game continues over multiple rounds, accumulating scores until a player reaches or exceeds 500 points. Ties result in an additional round to determine the winner. 500 Rum requires strategic thinking and skill, as players must utilize cards from the discard pile to maximize their score and outmaneuver opponents. The ability to lay off cards onto existing melds adds a layer of complexity and excitement.
