Polish developer 11 Bit Studios has unveiled another trailer for their highly anticipated sci-fi adventure, The Alters, as it edges closer to its release date. In a reflective move, the studio took a moment to honor one of their most iconic projects, the wartime survival game This War of Mine, which catapulted them to global fame over a decade ago.
While This War of Mine is renowned for its stark and often despairing atmosphere, The Alters shifts the focus to a more passionate and humor-infused narrative, revolving around the challenges faced by alternate versions of the protagonist, Jan Dolski. Despite these stark tonal differences, the developers highlight a deep-seated connection between the two titles.
Though set in vastly different environments and tones, both games center around the core theme of survival. In This War of Mine, players must navigate the brutal realities of war within a besieged city, meticulously managing resources and overcoming daily hurdles to keep their group alive. In contrast, The Alters frames survival as a race against time, where players are tasked with relocating their mobile base to escape the destructive reach of a merciless sun that turns everything to dust.
Both titles challenge players to step beyond their comfort zones, compelling them to explore dangerous territories in search of essential resources. The main distinction between the games lies in their protagonists: This War of Mine lets players lead a group of ordinary civilians, whereas The Alters introduces a unique team made up of different versions of the main character, Jan Dolski.
The Alters is slated for release in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Excitingly, the game will be available on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass from day one, ensuring a wide audience can experience this innovative take on survival and alternate realities.
