Absolute Batman Introduces Absolute Joker: What's Next?

Author : Riley May 13,2025

Absolute Batman has emerged as one of DC's most significant comic book launches in recent years, captivating readers with its bold and innovative take on the iconic character. The series kicked off with a bang, with the first issue becoming the best-selling comic of 2024. Since then, it has consistently topped sales charts, a testament to the enthusiastic reception of this bold and often surprising reinvention of the Dark Knight.

Following the conclusion of their first story arc, "The Zoo," creators Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta sat down with IGN to delve into how Absolute Batman reshapes the traditional Batman mythos. They shared insights on crafting the physically imposing Batman of the Absolute Universe, the pivotal role of Bruce Wayne's mother, and what fans can anticipate with the introduction of Absolute Joker.

The Batman of the Absolute Universe stands out as an imposing figure, characterized by his muscular build, shoulder spikes, and a Batsuit that diverges significantly from the classic design. This unique interpretation earned a spot on our list of the 10 greatest Batman costumes of all time. Snyder and Dragotta discussed the genesis of this hulking Dark Knight, designed to reflect a Batman devoid of the wealth and resources typically at his disposal.

“Scott's initial vision was to make him larger than life,” Dragotta shared with IGN. “He wanted the biggest Batman we've ever seen. I started with a large design, but Scott pushed me to go even bigger, almost to Hulk-like proportions.”

Dragotta elaborated, “The design philosophy was to make him bold, iconic, and embody the themes of his character. Every element of his suit, from the emblem to the utility belt, serves as a weapon. This approach will continue to evolve and influence the design moving forward.”

For Snyder, the necessity to make Batman physically imposing stemmed from the lack of financial power. “In the classic Batman narrative, his wealth is a superpower in itself. Without that, this Batman must rely on his sheer physical presence to intimidate his adversaries,” he explained. “When he faces super-criminals, his size and the utility of his suit become critical tools to assert his dominance and instill fear.”

Snyder added, “The villains he confronts are often untouchable due to their resources. Black Mask, for instance, represents that wealth and power. As the series progresses, Batman will face even greater challenges, requiring him to be a force of nature, ready to confront anyone who underestimates him.”

The influence of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns is evident in Absolute Batman, particularly in a striking splash page in issue #6 that pays homage to Miller’s iconic (and surprisingly divisive) Dark Knight Returns cover. Dragotta acknowledged this influence, saying, “Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's work on Batman: Year One has been a huge inspiration, especially in storytelling and narrative structure. The homage to Dark Knight Returns felt right and necessary.”

Giving Batman a Family

Absolute Batman not only reimagines Batman's appearance but also introduces significant changes to his backstory. One of the most impactful alterations is the revelation that Bruce Wayne's mother, Martha, is alive and well, fundamentally altering his character dynamics. No longer is Batman a solitary figure; he now has a family, which adds new layers of vulnerability and strength to his persona.

“Introducing Martha was a decision I wrestled with initially,” Snyder admitted. “Given the paternal focus in other universes, it felt more compelling to explore the maternal aspect. Once we introduced her, she became the moral compass of the series. Bruce, while a moral force, is young and idealistic, and Martha provides both strength and vulnerability, enriching the narrative significantly.”

Another key change introduced in the first issue is Bruce's childhood friendship with future villains like Waylon Jones, Oswald Cobblepot, Harvey Dent, Edward Nygma, and Selina Kyle. These relationships form an extended family that profoundly influences Bruce's journey to becoming Batman. Snyder hinted at upcoming issues that will explore how these characters shaped Bruce's development.

“If Bruce can't travel the world to train, who does he learn from?” Snyder posed. “He gains insights into Gotham's underworld from Oswald Cobblepot, learns to fight from Waylon Jones, masters logic from Edward Nygma, and understands city politics from Harvey Dent. Selina Kyle's influence is also significant, but I won't spoil that yet. These relationships are at the heart of the series, grounding and strengthening Batman while making him more vulnerable.”

In “The Zoo,” Absolute Batman begins to assert his presence in Gotham as new costumed supervillains emerge. The arc focuses on Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, who leads the Party Animals, a gang reveling in the city's chaos. Black Mask, though not a typical choice for a Batman origin story, was selected for his thematic fit.

“We saw potential in Black Mask to mold him into something fresh,” Snyder explained. “His skull-like appearance and nihilistic outlook embodied the idea of a world beyond saving, which we wanted to explore. We treated him as a creator-owned character, staying true to his essence as a crime boss but reimagining him to suit our narrative.”

The confrontation between Batman and Black Mask in issue #6 culminates in a brutal showdown on Sionis’ yacht. Batman, while not crossing the line into murder, leaves Black Mask severely beaten and blinded. This fight underscores Batman's underdog status in the Absolute Universe, where he's underestimated yet determined to make a difference.

“Those lines about not mattering and making a difference were not initially planned but became crucial,” Snyder noted. “They encapsulate our Batman's essence—he thrives on proving the naysayers wrong, using their doubts as fuel for his resolve.”

The Threat of Absolute Joker

The Joker is an inevitable presence in any Batman narrative, representing the antithesis of Batman's order with his chaotic nature. Snyder and Dragotta have been building towards a confrontation between the two, with Absolute Joker introduced as a wealthy, worldly, and humorless figure at the end of issue #1.

“In this inverted system, Batman is the disruptor, and Joker embodies the established order,” Snyder explained. “Their dynamic is central to the series, even when Joker isn't directly involved. This Joker is already a terrifying force before meeting Batman, and their relationship will evolve significantly as the series progresses.”

Dragotta added, “This Joker has been established as a powerful entity. The hints we've planted, like JK Industries and the Arks worldwide, suggest a master plan. We want readers to be intrigued and keep guessing.”

PlayWhat to Expect From Absolute Mr. Freeze and Absolute Bane ---------------------------------------------------------

The series takes a detour in issues #7 and #8, with Marcos Martin stepping in to introduce Mr. Freeze to the Absolute Universe. This arc promises a horror-infused take on the villain, reflecting Bruce's internal struggles with his new role as Batman.

“Marcos Martin's work focuses on the emotional heart of the story,” Snyder said. “Mr. Freeze's journey parallels Bruce's, but he's taken a darker path. This version is twisted, fitting our approach to reimagine villains in this universe.”

Issue #6 also sets the stage for a confrontation with Bane, a physically imposing villain. Snyder confirmed that Bane will be as large as ever, ensuring a formidable challenge for Batman. “Bane is really big. We wanted someone who would make Bruce's silhouette look smaller,” he stated.

As part of the larger Absolute line, Absolute Batman launched alongside Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Superman in 2024. DC plans to expand the line with Absolute Flash, Absolute Green Lantern, and Absolute Martian Manhunter in 2025. Snyder hinted at future interactions between these characters, saying, “By 2025, you'll see how these characters start to affect each other within the Absolute Universe.”
