While Baldur's Gate 3's highly anticipated Patch 8 is slated for release later this year, Larian's full attention is now dedicated to this new endeavor. Swen Vincke, Larian's head, recently acknowledged the studio's incredible journey with Baldur's Gate 3 on Twitter, hinting at future projects while expressing a desire to avoid a period of creative burnout.
In a statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed that the team is fully committed to their next title, initiating the aforementioned media blackout. Details remain scarce, but the studio has confirmed this new game will not be a Baldur's Gate sequel or any other D&D-related project. Instead, it represents a fresh start, a deliberate move away from the D&D universe following internal discussions.
Previous statements from Vincke offer vague clues. In November 2023, he hinted at a boundary-pushing project, and in July 2023, he mentioned the eventual return to the Divinity: Original Sin universe, though not as the immediate next project. The possibility of a completely new IP, perhaps venturing into science fiction, a contemporary setting, or even a different genre altogether, remains open.
