The writer of the Wesley Snipes' Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his readiness to help Marvel chief Kevin Feige resolve the issues surrounding Mahershala Ali’s stalled Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) reboot of the iconic character. The once-anticipated film has faced numerous obstacles, leaving fans with little hope for its continuation.
Last month, rapper and artist Flying Lotus shared on X/Twitter his involvement in the project before its collapse. "I guess we are so far from it even being a possibility now but. Yeah I was signed on to write music for the new BLADE movie before it fell thru," he stated. Flying Lotus, who recently directed the sci-fi horror film ASH for Shudder, expressed doubts about the project's revival but acknowledged the potential excitement it could have brought.
Just a day before Flying Lotus's tweet, costume designer Ruth E. Carter confirmed on The John Campea Show that she was set to design costumes for Blade, envisioning a 1920s setting that promised unique and captivating costume and production designs. Actor Delroy Lindo, who was also attached to the project alongside Ali, shared his disappointment with Entertainment Weekly about the film's derailment despite initial enthusiasm from Marvel for his input.
Blade was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, with an intended release this November. However, the film has seen multiple directors, including Yann Demange and Bassam Tariq, come and go without progress. Goyer, who wrote and directed parts of the original trilogy, expressed his confusion and eagerness to contribute to the reboot in an interview with ScreenRant, questioning the delays.
Seven months ago, Blade was removed from Marvel's release schedule, and no new date has been confirmed. Despite this, Kevin Feige reassured fans in an interview with Omelete in November 2024 that Marvel remains committed to bringing Blade to the MCU, emphasizing their love for the character and Mahershala Ali's portrayal.
In related news, the MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring a cameo by Wesley Snipes as Blade, was a massive success, grossing $1.3 billion globally. Ryan Reynolds, who played Deadpool, advocated for a Logan-like send-off film for Snipes' Blade, acknowledging the original Blade films' pivotal role in paving the way for the superhero genre and the MCU. Reynolds emphasized on X/Twitter, "There is no Fox Marvel Universe or MCU without Blade first creating a market. He’s Marvel Daddy. Please retweet for a Logan-like send-off."
Additionally, Reynolds is reportedly in the early stages of developing a Deadpool and X-Men ensemble film, where Deadpool would not be the main focus but would share the spotlight with other X-Men characters, allowing them to be utilized in innovative ways.
