Chris Evans Says He Isn't Returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Another Avengers

Author : Emery Mar 22,2025

Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Avengers: Doomsday or any other future films, despite recent reports suggesting otherwise. Evans directly refuted a Deadline article claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling the report "not true." This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, who plays the new Captain America, stating his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie subsequently confirmed Evans himself denied this in a conversation between the two actors. Evans emphasized his contentment with retirement from the MCU, a sentiment he's reiterated since Avengers: Endgame.

While Evans did reprise his Fox character, Johnny Storm, in Deadpool & Wolverine, this was a smaller, comedic role significantly different from his leading role as Captain America.

The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following Jonathan Majors' removal from the franchise after his assault and harassment conviction. Majors was poised to become a major antagonist, similar to Thanos, but his departure has seemingly created a shift in plans. Marvel Studios has since announced Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., as the new primary villain. This announcement fueled speculation about other original Avengers returning, though no official confirmations have been made beyond Downey Jr.'s casting.

Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed Doctor Strange's absence from Avengers: Doomsday, but will feature in the sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, in a "central role." The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which will reportedly continue the multiverse storyline, potentially including Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter.
