Civilization VII: Topping Charts and Revolutionizing Campaigns
Civilization VII has been crowned PC Gamer's "Most Wanted Game of 2025," a title revealed during their December 6th PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted event. This accolade places Civ VII at the forefront of highly anticipated 2025 releases, surpassing titles like Doom: The Dark Ages and Monster Hunter Wilds.
The ranking, determined by a vote from The Council (a panel of over 70 developers, creators, and editors), highlights the immense excitement surrounding the game's upcoming launch. The PC Gaming Show, a nearly three-hour livestream, showcased Civ VII alongside other anticipated titles, including Let’s Build a Dungeon and Drivers of the Apocalypse.
Further solidifying its position, Civ VII will enjoy a simultaneous release on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch on February 11th, 2025.
A New Approach to Campaign Completion
Addressing player feedback regarding incomplete campaigns in Civ VI, Creative Director Ed Beach unveiled a revolutionary new mechanic: Ages. This system divides a single playthrough into three distinct eras – Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern – allowing players to transition between historically linked civilizations as each Age concludes.
This innovative approach, explained during a PC Gamer interview, ensures historical continuity. Transitions aren't random; they reflect real-world historical connections. For instance, the Roman Empire might seamlessly transition to the French Empire, potentially bridging the gap with the Norman Empire. Leaders persist across Ages, maintaining player connection and rivalry.
The "overbuild" feature allows for the construction of new buildings atop existing ones, while Wonders and certain structures remain consistent throughout the playthrough. This dynamic system offers players a richer, more engaging experience, exploring diverse civilizations and leadership styles within a single campaign.
