You'll first meet Rompopolo in Chapter 2, during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields, within the Oilwell Basin region on your way to Azuz City. Defeating it is crucial for story progression, but you can battle it repeatedly afterward—either by chance encounters in the Oilwell Basin or by starting the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest from your Tent. Once defeated, its entry will grace your Large Monster Field Guide.

To prepare for this fight, equip water-element weapons (Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest is a good source early on), and gear with fire resistance (also farmable from Uth Duna or later from Ajarakan). Consider crafting a Fire Charm I talisman or a Defense Charm I for extra protection. Don't forget a hearty meal to boost health and stamina before the hunt begins!

Rompopolo's unique attacks utilize its gas-filled, saggy skin. Be prepared for explosions! It can also inflict poison, so pack Antidotes. Your Palico can help mitigate status ailments.

Key attacks to watch out for:

  • Arm Swipe: A relatively easy-to-dodge double swipe.
  • Lunge With Arm Swipe: A charging attack with an arcing swipe.
  • Tail Swing: A straightforward tail attack.
  • Poison Stream or Swipe: A poison gas spray or a charging swipe with poison spray.
  • Oil Explosion: Rompopolo ignites oil pools beneath you from a distance.
  • Charged Oil Explosion: A larger, more damaging oil explosion used later in the fight.

You can choose to capture or kill Rompopolo. To capture, weaken it until your Palico notes it's "tired," then use Shock Traps or Pitfall Traps, followed by a Tranq Bomb. Both methods yield rewards, with some items exclusive to capture or kill.
