Dragon Quest XII remains under development, with updates to be released incrementally, according to series creator Yuji Horii. During a recent livestream with his radio show group, KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, Horii confirmed that the Square Enix development team is diligently working on the project.
This is the first substantial update since May 2024, following the passing of key figures Akira Toriyama (character designer) and Koichi Sugiyama (composer). The departure of lead producer Yu Miyake to head Square Enix's mobile game division was also previously announced.
Recent restructuring at Square Enix and a lack of updates had sparked fan concerns about the game's potential cancellation. However, Horii's statement allays these fears, confirming Dragon Quest XII's ongoing development.
Initially announced during the franchise's 35th-anniversary celebration, Dragon Quest XII will be the first main series installment since 2017's Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Square Enix has since reported that the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake significantly surpassed sales projections, reaching 2 million copies sold.
