FromSoftware has unveiled additional details about their newly announced exclusive for the Switch 2, titled "The Duskbloods." This collaboration with Nintendo has influenced not only the game's style but also the design of the hub area's keeper, introducing a unique and adorable twist to FromSoftware's traditional aesthetic.
The trailer showcased during the Switch 2 Direct concluded with a captivating shot of a winged rat character adorned with glowing glyphs, gazing directly at the camera. This character, as it turns out, serves as the hub companion for players in "The Duskbloods."
Director Hidetaka Miyazaki elaborated on the character's role in an interview with Nintendo, stating, "That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance." He further added, "I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership."
When pressed on what he meant by "Nintendo-esque," Miyazaki revealed, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughter)."
FromSoftware's shrine keepers have traditionally been pivotal in guiding players through their intricate worlds. Iconic figures like Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll have been constant touchstones throughout players' journeys, often empowering them to progress further.
In the context of "The Duskbloods," a game featuring both player-versus-player and player-versus-environment elements, the winged rat's role in providing guidance remains to be fully explored. Miyazaki teased that FromSoft is experimenting with "a lot of new and interesting ideas," hinting at innovative features when "The Duskbloods" launches on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
