Recent reports from Niko Partners, a leading video game market research firm, suggest a joint venture between Square Enix and Tencent to develop a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV. This article explores the details of this potential collaboration and its implications.
Square Enix and Tencent Partner on Potential FFXIV Mobile Game
Confirmation Still Pending
Niko Partners' latest report details a list of games recently approved for release in China by the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA). Among these approved titles is a mobile adaptation of Square Enix's popular MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV, with Tencent reportedly leading the development. Other notable titles on the list include mobile and PC versions of Rainbow Six, along with two Marvel-based games (Marvel Snap and Marvel Rivals), and a mobile game based on Dynasty Warriors 8.
While rumors of Tencent's involvement in a Final Fantasy XIV mobile project circulated last month, neither company has officially confirmed these reports.
According to Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners, the FFXIV mobile game is anticipated to be a standalone MMORPG distinct from the PC version. However, Ahmad clarified on X (formerly Twitter) on August 3rd that this information is primarily based on industry speculation and lacks official verification.
Given Tencent's significant presence in the mobile gaming market, this partnership aligns with Square Enix's recently announced strategy of expanding its flagship titles, such as Final Fantasy, across multiple platforms. Square Enix explicitly stated in early May its intention to aggressively pursue a multi-platform strategy.
