Wizards of the Coast has been teasing the upcoming Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy crossover all summer, and the recent reveal at PAX East delivered on the hype. Fans were treated to a vast collection of cards spanning both the main set and the Commander decks, showcasing elements from across Final Fantasy’s storied history.

The Universes Beyond collaboration with Final Fantasy is taking two distinct approaches—Commander decks and a booster-driven series—resulting in an expansive lineup of cards. The main set dives deep into the numbered Final Fantasy titles, from the classic Final Fantasy I to the latest Final Fantasy XVI, offering fresh mechanics inspired by the games’ lore. Meanwhile, the Commander Decks zoom in on four beloved entries: Final Fantasy VI, VII, X, and XIV. Each deck features iconic characters such as Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y'shtola as their respective Commanders.

The panel unveiled several standout cards that capture the essence of their respective games. For instance, Final Fantasy IV’s Cecil embodies the transformation mechanic, shifting from a Dark Knight to a Paladin. Summons like Shiva and Bahamut follow a "Saga Creature" theme, blending Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy concepts seamlessly.

One of the most talked-about cards is Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, featuring artwork by Tetsuya Nomura. The card’s design reflects Sephiroth’s evolution across the Final Fantasy VII series, culminating in his terrifying final form.

Other highlights include nods to memorable moments from Final Fantasy X. Together, Forever captures the poignant journey of its protagonists, while Inspiring Call brings back one of the game’s most iconic scenes. Even lighter moments, like the Wall Market scene, find their way onto cards like Clever Concealment, complete with a cheeky mechanic.

Final Fantasy XIV fans will appreciate the Easter eggs sprinkled throughout the set. The Hildibrand Manderville card plays on his recurring gag of disappearing and reappearing. Archaeomancer’s Map even references a real location from the game. Players have also enjoyed spotting hidden details, such as the Wondrous Tails book depicted in the Tome of Legends card.

While the Commander decks received plenty of attention, sneak peeks like Commune With Beavers suggest the main set holds even more surprises. Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy set launches on June 13, 2025, with pre-releases scheduled for the week before. Fans can look forward to diving into a world where two legendary franchises collide.
