PlayStation Productions Unveils Ambitious Slate of Game Adaptations at CES 2025
PlayStation Productions made a splash at CES 2025, announcing a significant expansion of its video game adaptation pipeline. The January 7th presentation revealed several projects slated for release in 2025 and beyond.
New Adaptations Announced:
- Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Anime Series: A new anime series based on Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a co-op mode from the popular game, is in the works, a collaborative effort between Crunchyroll and Aniplex. Directed by Takanobu Mizumo, with story composition by Gen Urobuchi, and music by Sony Music, it's set for an exclusive Crunchyroll premiere in 2027.
- Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2 Films: Asad Qizilbash (Head of PlayStation Productions) and Ashley Brucks (President of Screen Gems) confirmed film adaptations of Horizon Zero Dawn (produced by Sony Pictures) and Helldivers 2 (produced by Columbia Pictures) are underway, though details remain scarce. They also surprised the audience with a reveal of the Until Dawn film adaptation, set for release on April 25, 2025.
- The Last of Us Season Two: Neil Druckmann, following a brief mention of Naughty Dog's upcoming Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, unveiled a new trailer for The Last of Us season two, which will adapt the storyline from The Last of Us Part II, introducing characters like Abby and Dina.
Past Successes and Ongoing Projects:
PlayStation Productions, established in 2019, has already seen success with adaptations like Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023), both achieving strong box office results. The Twisted Metal series on Peacock, while not as critically acclaimed as The Last of Us, completed production on its second season in late 2024 (release date pending).
The studio also continues work on film adaptations of Days Gone and a Uncharted sequel, along with a God of War TV series, although details on these projects remain limited.
The breadth of announcements at CES 2025 points to PlayStation Productions' continued commitment to expanding the reach of its video game franchises through diverse media, driven by audience demand and the proven viability of these adaptations.
