The acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, Osmos, returns to Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated technology, developer Hemisphere Games has re-released it with a completely updated port.
Remember Osmos? This unique, award-winning puzzle challenges you to absorb other microorganisms while avoiding the same fate. Simple to learn, yet deeply engaging, it was unfortunately unavailable on Android for a considerable time.
Now, years after its 2010 debut, Osmos is back on Google Play, offering a completely modernized experience for contemporary Android operating systems. Experience this micro-organic battle royale at its finest!
Hemisphere Games explains in a blog post that initial Android development, done with Apportable, was hampered by the studio's subsequent closure, preventing further updates. Consequently, the game was removed due to incompatibility with modern Android (it only ran on obsolete 32-bit systems). This new version features a completely rebuilt port.
A Cellular Masterpiece
Still unconvinced? Watch the gameplay trailer above – it speaks volumes. Osmos' innovative mechanics have, ironically through a process akin to osmosis, influenced countless other games. It’s a shame it predates the rise of social media; it would undoubtedly be a TikTok sensation.
Osmos feels like a nostalgic gem, well worth revisiting. It represents a time when mobile gaming felt limitless – a golden age many hope to see repeated.
Of course, many excellent brain-teasers are available for mobile, even if none are quite as visually stunning as Osmos. Check out our top 25 best puzzle games for iOS and Android if you need more convincing!
