Hollow Knight: Silksong Dev Sparks Nintendo Switch 2 Hype with Cake Image

Author : Benjamin Apr 03,2025

It's been six years since Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the much-anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania hit Hollow Knight. Throughout these years, fans have eagerly awaited updates, with Silksong appearing and disappearing from various showcases. At one point, Microsoft even suggested the game might launch before June 2023. The Game Awards came and went without a mention of Hollow Knight: Silksong, leaving fans wondering if the newly announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct might finally bring the news they've been hoping for.

The buzz among fans stems from a seemingly innocuous picture of a cake. Here's the scoop:

Astute fans on the Hollow Knight subreddit spotted that on January 15, Team Cherry's co-director William Pellen changed his Twitter/X profile picture to an image of a chocolate cake. Pellen tweeted: “something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow.”

At the time, rumors swirled that Nintendo would reveal the Switch 2 on January 16, which they did. However, many questions about the next-gen console remain unanswered. Did Pellen hint at the Switch 2 reveal with his tweet? If so, what was his intention?

This is where the Hollow Knight community's speculation kicked into high gear. Fans conducted a reverse image search on the cake picture, which led them to a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe on Bon Appétit, published on April 2, 2024.

Why is that date significant? Because Nintendo confirmed that the Nintendo Direct for the Nintendo Switch 2 will air on April 2, 2025. Fans believe Pellen might have initiated a Silksong alternate reality game (ARG) with his tweet and cake photo.

The detective work didn't stop there. Fans are also dissecting Pellen's new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr. Redditor Representative-True proposed an intriguing theory: “The character limit on Twitter handles is 15 characters, which is the length of ‘everydruidwaswr.’ I think 'wr' is likely the start of a word, like wrong or something. I have yet to decipher this, but the Druid of the Moss Temple is a Silksong NPC.”

The intrigue deepens with Pellen's new X/Twitter name, "little bomey." Fans noted that Little Boomey is a wine from Southern Australia, where Team Cherry is based, though the spelling differs. What could this signify?

It's important to recall that when Hollow Knight: Silksong was first announced, Team Cherry listed launch platforms as Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. However, that was six years ago. Could Nintendo have secured Hollow Knight: Silksong as a launch title for the Switch 2? Might it be a timed exclusive? Or is this all just wild speculation from fans desperate for news?

We'll have to wait a few more months to find out. In the meantime, take a look at everything announced at Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal.
