New interview with Pokémon Go director reveals why they think fans shouldn\'t worry about Scopely

Author : Daniel Apr 18,2025

After the recent acquisition of Pokémon Go developer Niantic by Scopely, the company behind Monopoly Go, fans have expressed concerns ranging from increased ads to data privacy issues. However, a recent interview with Michael Steranka, a product director at Niantic, published on Polygon, aims to alleviate these fears.

In the interview, Steranka praises Scopely and assures fans that both companies share a similar vision. He confidently stated that Scopely has no plans to introduce intrusive ads into Pokémon Go. This is a significant reassurance for players who have been worried about the game's future direction.

For those concerned about privacy, Steranka was unequivocal: Niantic will not share or sell player data to third parties. He emphasized that the transition to working under Scopely would have minimal impact on Niantic's operations, if any.

ytIf it ain't broke...While it's natural to anticipate some degree of corporate influence, I personally believe Scopely will not heavily intervene in Pokémon Go's operations. The game has been, and continues to be, highly successful. The more significant business move appears to be Niantic's new spin-off team, which is focused on further developing AR technology.

Steranka also highlighted the close involvement of The Pokémon Company in the decision-making process for Pokémon Go. This means that any changes or features that The Pokémon Company would not approve of are unlikely to be implemented now or in the future.
