The LEGO River Steamboat draws inspiration from the iconic paddle boats that once navigated the Mississippi River during the 1800s. Initially used for industrial transport, these steamboats evolved into pleasure vessels offering amenities and gambling once replaced by steam engine trains and screw propeller boats. Today, they continue to serve as entertainment venues; my wife and I enjoyed a riverboat cruise during our New Orleans honeymoon, complete with dining, drinks, dancing, and live jazz.

This LEGO set is a true delight for enthusiasts. It features a jazz lounge and dining room, alongside practical areas like a boiler engine room that connects to the paddle wheel. Pushing the boat activates the wheel's movement. The pilothouse includes a steering wheel that, when turned, adjusts the rudder at the boat's base. Additional features include a kitchen, crew sleeping area, and an anchor on a chain that can be raised and lowered. The build is meticulously divided into 32 bags, starting with the ship's base, which houses the boiler room and a miniature nautical museum showcasing various steam engines. The kitchen area, complete with a refrigerator, stove, and sink, exemplifies LEGO's clever design minimalism, where elements like a hot dog bun from another set become engine reinforcements here.

One floor up, the main deck hosts the dining room and jazz lounge. The lounge, positioned above the stern, is equipped with tiny LEGO accessories for musical instruments. The dining room boasts elegant tablecloths and chairs, with light fixtures straddling the inside and outside of the compartment. Wall posters advertise onboard entertainment, including a reference to the A-Frame Cabin, another LEGO Ideas set.

The dining room is built separately and placed into the larger structure, allowing for deck space where minifigures can enjoy the views. However, the set does not include minifigures, possibly emphasizing its status as a display piece rather than a play set.

The crew deck above includes sleeping quarters and a bathroom with all necessary amenities. The pilothouse showcases an impressive engineering feat with its steering mechanism, threading a rod through all four levels to connect the wheel to the rudder. Such attention to detail and planning is highly appreciated by LEGO builders.

Small but delightful touches abound in this set, from repurposed croissant accessories as billowy flags to neat rows of railings and patterned tiles that mimic rugs. Despite its size, the set feels efficiently designed, with each of its 4,090 pieces serving a purpose.
