During today's Mario Kart World Direct, we received exciting new information about the game's innovative Free Roam mode. This feature, which we experienced hands-on last week, allows players to explore the expansive, Forza Horizon-inspired world map freely. Unlike previous Mario Kart games, where race tracks were isolated, Mario Kart World integrates them into an open world, enabling players to drive from one track to another and enjoy the spaces in between.
In Free Roam mode, players can embark on mini-adventures when not racing. The world is filled with hidden collectibles such as coins and ? panels, though their specific benefits remain undisclosed. Additionally, P-Switches are scattered throughout, triggering small challenges like collecting blue coins when activated.
Free Roam mode also includes a Photo Mode, allowing players to capture their racers in various poses and angles at any time. Importantly, Free Roam is not just a solo experience; it supports multiplayer fun. Up to four players can explore together on the same system using split-screen, while up to eight players can join in via local wireless play, with two players per system.
Today's Mario Kart World Direct also showcased new characters, courses, and additional modes. You can find a comprehensive overview of all the announcements here.
