Mario Kart World's Character Select Screen Hides a Legendary Nintendo Easter Egg

Nintendo fans have uncovered a beloved Easter egg in the Nintendo Switch 2 launch title Mario Kart World — the iconic Totaka's Song makes a surprise appearance once again.

This recurring musical motif, composed by legendary Nintendo developer Kazumi Totaka, can be heard on the game’s character selection screen. Simply select Yoshi from the roster and let the green dinosaur idle during his dance animation. After a few moments, he’ll begin humming the unmistakable melody — yes, that’s Yoshi serenading players with Totaka's Song.

“I was idling on the Character Select screen when I noticed Mario began humming after enough time passed,” shared Reddit user u/charizardtelephone. “I thought, 'Huh, they could totally hide hidden tunes like that.' Wait. Hidden music? In a Nintendo game? With Yoshi? It was too good to be true.”

Kazumi Totaka, known for his work across titles like Super Smash Bros., Wii Sports, Animal Crossing, and Pikmin, has embedded variations of this melody in numerous games he's worked on — often as a personal signature. He’s also the voice behind many of Yoshi’s iconic sounds, making this Easter egg even more fitting.

"After a few seconds, lo and behold, Yoshi begins humming Totaka's Song like the idle Yoshis do in Mario Kart 8," the user continued. "Very cool Easter egg. Not sure if anyone else has noticed it yet."

In Japan, Mario Kart World is already outpacing the physical sales of the original Switch’s launch title, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Bundled with the new console, it marks Nintendo’s first major hit on the Switch 2 platform. Up next is Donkey Kong Bananza, which will receive a deeper showcase in an upcoming Nintendo Direct later this week.
