In an insightful interview at Gamescom, Mortal Kombat co-founder Ed Boon shed light on the unique approach NetherRealm Studios is taking with Omni-Man and Homelander in Mortal Kombat 1. Boon emphasized the studio's commitment to ensuring these characters stand out as distinct entities within the game, dispelling any concerns about them sharing similar combat styles.
Ed Boon Confirms Homelander and Omni-Man Will Play Differently
During his conversation with IGN at Gamescom, Boon addressed the fanbase's worries about potential overlap in the combat mechanics of Homelander and Omni-Man. He reassured fans that the development team at NetherRealm Studios is dedicated to crafting unique experiences for each character. By carefully differentiating their abilities, the team aims to give players the sensation of controlling two entirely different heroes.
Boon highlighted the creative freedom they've been granted, which allows them to explore various concepts for these characters. However, he stressed their intention to avoid duplicating Superman-like abilities, such as heat vision, for both Homelander and Omni-Man. "Obviously, we could do anything with the characters, but I don’t think we’re going to have both Homelander and Omni-Man have heat vision or something like that," Boon explained.
Further elaborating on the distinctiveness of these characters, Boon discussed how the team drew inspiration from the heroes' actions in their respective shows to design their Fatalities. He emphasized that while the core attacks would significantly differentiate Homelander and Omni-Man, the team was mindful of the common assumption that these characters might be too similar. "They’re definitely going to play differently. The main attacks are going to really differentiate them, but we’re definitely aware of the assumption that some people were making on, ‘Oh, they’re just going to be the same characters,'" Boon stated.
