MultiVersus Players Praise Major Season 5 Gameplay Changes Ahead of Server Shutdown — and Now #SaveMultiVersus Is Trending Online

Author : Max Mar 18,2025

MultiVersus is set to shut down after Season 5 ends in May, but a recent update introducing significant combat speed improvements has breathed new life into the game. This unexpected boost in gameplay quality has even ignited a #SaveMultiVersus movement on social media.

The community eagerly launched into the game's fifth and final season on February 4th, 2025. While Player First Games had previously announced the game's closure, the update included the final playable characters – DC's Aquaman and Looney Tunes' Lola Bunny – alongside sweeping changes to combat speed, resulting in a much faster-paced experience. This fundamental adjustment, long-requested by players, has arrived just as the game is ending its run.

Players noticed the increased combat speed after Player First Games released a Season 5 Combat Changes Preview video on X/Twitter. The difference is striking; characters chain combos and move across the screen with unprecedented speed. This marks a significant departure from the floaty gameplay criticized during the 2022 beta and even surpasses the speed seen after the game's relaunch in May of the previous year.

The Season 5 patch notes attribute the speed increase to a reduction in hit pause across most attacks. This makes combo execution significantly faster regardless of the character used. Several characters, including Morty, LeBron, Iron Giant, Bugs Bunny, Black Adam, and others, received additional speed adjustments, notably faster fall speeds on certain aerial attacks. Garnet's adjustments aim to balance her already high speed, strengthening her ground ringout potential while slightly weakening her aerial ringout potential.

>game dies
>they finally start doing clever marketing
>they actually improve the gameplay

MultiVersus Season 5 transforms the nearly year-old game, offering players far more than just two new characters. However, this revitalized experience is short-lived. The game will shut down completely on May 30th, ending seasonal content and removing it from digital storefronts. Only offline modes will remain.

This situation has left fans feeling both shocked and frustrated. X user @PJiggles\_ aptly described MultiVersus as "the most interesting bad game in existence," highlighting its troubled beta, 2024 relaunch, and the sudden combat speed improvement. Professional Smash Bros. player Mew2King questioned why these improvements weren't implemented sooner.

…but man, if this was how the relaunch started off we could’ve really had something.

A Reddit user echoed this sentiment, stating that the Season 5 update fixed every major issue, praising improved shield animations and the overall polish. Despite the impending shutdown, the user expressed hope for a potential reversal by Warner Bros., emphasizing the game's untapped potential.

Sooooo
You announced the game was shutting down but then fixed the thing that made players quit

Despite this outpouring of player enthusiasm, Player First and Warner Bros. show no signs of changing their plans. Game director Tony Huynh shared closing thoughts and addressed player concerns on X, and real-money transactions were disabled on January 31st. The Season 5 premium battle pass has been made free for all players.

MultiVersus will officially shut down at 9 am PT on May 30th. While the shutdown is proceeding as planned, players are finding solace in creating and sharing memes, marking a bittersweet end to a game that finally met their expectations just before its demise.
