NieR: Automata's compelling narrative unfolds across three playthroughs. While the first two share similarities, the third reveals significant story elements unseen before, extending the experience beyond the initial credits.
Although the game features three main playthroughs leading to multiple endings, some endings require specific character actions. This guide details the three playable characters and explains how to switch between them.
All Playable Characters In NieR: Automata
NieR: Automata centers around 2B, 9S, and A2. 2B and 9S, partners in the story, dominate screen time depending on the playthrough. Each character boasts a unique combat style, offering diverse gameplay even with the same chip loadouts. While all three are playable, switching isn't always straightforward.
How To Switch Characters In NieR: Automata
Character selection isn't freeform during the initial playthroughs:
- Playthrough 1: 2B
- Playthrough 2: 9S
- Playthrough 3: 2B, 9S, and A2, with switching dictated by the storyline.
Completing a main ending unlocks Chapter Select, enabling character choice. Chapter Select allows revisiting any of the 17 chapters. Numbers beside chapters indicate completed/incomplete side quests. If a character shows numbers for a chapter, you can replay it as that character.
Note that later chapters, especially in Playthrough 3, restrict character selection. Chapter Select allows character changes, but you must navigate to story points where that character was originally playable. Saving before changing chapters preserves progress, allowing you to level up all three characters' shared experience towards the maximum level.
