NieR: Automata: Unlocking Filler Metal

Obtaining Filler Metal in NieR: Automata: A Comprehensive Guide

Acquiring certain upgrade materials in NieR: Automata proves more challenging than others. Many drop from enemies, but some, like Filler Metal, are randomly spawned throughout the game world. This inherent randomness makes farming these items a test of patience.

This guide details two methods for obtaining Filler Metal: scavenging and purchasing.

Where to Find Filler Metal

Filler Metal is a rare drop found in specific item spawn locations deep within the Factory area. The exact location varies with each playthrough, and its spawn rate is significantly lower than other items. After progressing through the main story and accessing the Factory: Hanger fast travel point, you'll have an ideal starting point for your search. Note that you may need to unlock this access point again depending on your story progression.

While increased movement speed can slightly improve your farming efficiency, reliably farming Filler Metal remains difficult. Your best strategy is to thoroughly explore the Factory, collecting every naturally spawned item. However, a more reliable, albeit expensive, alternative exists.

Where to Buy Filler Metal

The only vendor selling Filler Metal is the Shopkeeper Machine in the Amusement Park. However, this option only unlocks after completing all three playthroughs and obtaining one of the final endings. Using Chapter Select to revisit the Shopkeeper after completing the game will reveal Filler Metal in its inventory, priced at 11,250 G each.

This high cost is offset by its reliability, a stark contrast to the unpredictable nature of farming in the Factory. Considering the necessity of Filler Metal for crucial Pod upgrades and the increasing enemy levels, purchasing becomes a viable, even preferable, strategy for late-game players with sufficient Gil.
