Why NIKKE Players Felt Let Down by the Evangelion Crossover Event

Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE collaboration with Neon Genesis Evangelion fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. The August 2024 crossover event, featuring Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato, faced several challenges.

Design Discrepancies: The initial designs for the Evangelion characters, created by Shift Up, were deemed too suggestive by the Evangelion creators. Subsequent modifications, while satisfying the licensors, failed to resonate with players. The toned-down aesthetics lacked the appeal of the original concepts.

Player Disappointment: The limited-time characters and costumes offered insufficient incentive for players to spend. Asuka's gacha skin, in particular, was criticized for its close resemblance to her base model. The lack of significant visual flair diminished the appeal.

Identity Dilution: Players expressed concern that recent collaborations, including the Evangelion event, diluted NIKKE's established identity of bold anime character designs and engaging storytelling. The overall event was perceived as underwhelming and stretched-out.

Looking Ahead: Shift Up acknowledged the feedback and pledged to improve future collaborations. The hope is that future events will showcase more inspired designs and compelling content. Both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE are available on the Google Play Store. The expectation is for a significant improvement in future content releases.
