First Look: Nintendo Switch 2 Cartridge Revealed

Author : Jonathan May 25,2025

Nintendo has given us our first detailed glimpse at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just ahead of the console's much-anticipated launch next month. The reveal came via a video on the Nintendo Today app, showcasing the official Switch 2 carry case, which is thoughtfully designed to hold up to six cartridges from both the original Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2.

As previously confirmed, Switch 2 cartridges share the same dimensions and form as those for the original Switch, allowing the new console to play games from both generations using a single cartridge slot. However, there's a noticeable difference that sets them apart: the color. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red, a design choice that appears to be standard across all titles, not limited to the Mario Kart World cartridge featured in the video. You can catch the video on the Nintendo Today app or via OatmealDome's post on X / Twitter.

The cartridge's label also sports the new Switch 2 logo, differentiating it from the original Switch's design. The official Switch 2 carrying case not only has room for the console with the new Joy-Con 2 attached but also accommodates six cartridges and two Joy-Con 2 straps.

Beyond the aesthetic changes, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same build as their predecessors, including the infamous bitter coating that Nintendo uses to prevent accidental ingestion. Takuhiro Dohta, the director of the Switch 2, explained to GameSpot, "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption. We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."

The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to hit the market on June 5, 2025, just three weeks away. In related news, a report surfaced today indicating that Nintendo's key partner, Samsung, is already considering a hardware refresh for the Switch 2, possibly featuring an OLED screen upgrade.
