Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Shipping Manifests

Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could offer an unconventional feature: mouse functionality. While the practicality of this for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.

This intriguing possibility emerged from Vietnamese customs data obtained by Famiboards user LiC, who previously uncovered information about a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has been a rich vein of Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.

In early January 2025, LiC shared further findings: shipping manifests referencing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "for game console handles." The use of "mouse soles," a term for the bottom of computer mice, strongly hints at potential mouse-like functionality for the new Joy-Cons.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were noted. These haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they are new, unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, is large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handhelds

While innovative for Nintendo, this isn't unprecedented in handheld gaming. Lenovo's Legion GO, released in 2023, already featured a mouse mode for its right controller when rotated sideways. Lenovo even included a plastic piece to aid smooth surface movement.

The Legion GO also boasts magnetic controller rails, a feature also rumored for the Switch 2. These similarities suggest the Legion GO might offer a preview of Nintendo's hybrid console approach.
