Nintendo rolls out a fresh firmware update for the Switch in anticipation of the Switch 2 launch.
According to patch notes on Nintendo's official site, the Switch Firmware Update 20.0.0 introduces several enhancements to the aging console as it prepares for its successor's June debut.
A standout feature is the new system transfer option to Switch 2, now accessible via System Settings. This allows seamless migration between consoles using local wireless connectivity.
For those transitioning between consoles, Nintendo offers cloud backup for transfer data - accessible later on your new Switch 2 device.
Important note: After initiating transfer, your original Switch will revert to factory settings. Nintendo advises completing this process only when your Switch 2 is ready for immediate setup.
The update sparks varied reactions: Some upgraders welcome the flexibility to sell their old consoles sooner, while others express concerns about mandatory resets and potential data risks.
The refresh also includes redesigned user icons, notably featuring Donkey Kong's new look from upcoming Switch 2 titles Bananza and Mario Kart World.
