In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most pivotal decisions awaits players near the story's climax: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.
Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this choice, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, exploring Baldur's Gate thoroughly. This decision carries significant weight; companions might sacrifice themselves. High skill checks (potentially 30) may be required to influence companion decisions.
(Spoilers Ahead!)
Should You Free Orpheus?
The decision hinges on player preferences. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids.
Two Paths Diverge:
-
Siding with the Emperor: Orpheus is assimilated, his knowledge absorbed. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. This grants an advantage against the Netherbrain but might alienate fans of these companions.
-
Freeing Orpheus: The Emperor allies with the Netherbrain. A party member risks becoming a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight against the Netherbrain, potentially sacrificing himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers.
In short, choose the Emperor to avoid Mind Flayer transformation, but free Orpheus if you're willing to risk it. The Emperor's path might lead to Lae'zel's betrayal and Karlach's return to Avernus.
The Moral Compass:
The "good" choice depends on individual perspectives, but it boils down to loyalty. Orpheus is the rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's demands might seem overly forceful. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if it affects the wider world.
The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to stop the Netherbrain and aid the party. He acknowledges necessary sacrifices. Following his plan might lead to Mind Flayer transformation, but it remains a morally upright path. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings; strategic choices can yield favorable outcomes for all.
