PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, No Grand Slam

If you polled gamers on which pro sports series they'd most like to see 2K tackle next, a resurrected NFL 2K would likely top the list. However, 2K is instead returning for a third round with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours, it's a promising entry.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for years, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago. This experience is evident in 2K25's polish. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an expansive course selection (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC, didn't detract significantly from the overall experience.

PlayThe improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control scheme (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty settings allow for both forgiving and challenging gameplay, catering to casual and hardcore players alike. The ability to shape shots via LB and adjust tee shots based on course obstacles adds strategic depth. The enhanced ball physics also contribute to a more realistic feel. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, enhanced the initial experience.

The MyCareer mode receives a boost with narrative mechanics, allowing players to choose a heroic or villainous path, impacting stat boosts. Earned VC unlocks gear that further affects stats, alongside skill upgrades through gameplay. The addition of weekly refresh Quests (e.g., achieving 10 consecutive birdies) provides ongoing goals.

PlayThe MyPlayer creator, while not extensively explored, offers sufficient customization options, along with skill trees. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social gameplay. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players with differing time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. This makes it hard to generate overwhelming excitement, but it appears to be a solid, enjoyable golf game. A playable demo is currently available, allowing players to experience the game firsthand.
