Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team Joins Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack

Pokémon Adds Another Game to the NSO Library

Get ready for a dungeon-crawling adventure! Nintendo announced the addition of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service, launching August 9th. This classic Game Boy Advance title joins the growing library of retro games available to Expansion Pack subscribers.

This beloved roguelike spin-off puts players in the paws (or fins, or wings!) of a Pokémon, tasked with solving the mystery of their human-to-Pokémon transformation. Explore randomly generated dungeons, complete missions, and unravel the captivating storyline. While a Blue Rescue Team version existed for the Nintendo DS, and a remake, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, launched on the Switch in 2020, this is a chance to revisit the original GBA experience.

Mainline Pokémon Games Still Sought After

The Expansion Pack's curated selection of classic games continues to expand, but the absence of mainline Pokémon titles remains a point of discussion among fans. While spin-offs like Pokémon Snap and Pokémon Puzzle League are included, many players are eager to see core series entries like Pokémon Red and Blue added. Speculation regarding this absence ranges from potential N64 Transfer Pak compatibility issues to complexities with Nintendo Switch Online's infrastructure and integration with the Pokémon Home app.

One fan theorized that the lack of mainline games might be due to concerns about preventing exploitation of trading mechanics. The intricacies of these potential hurdles remain unclear, but the anticipation for mainline Pokémon games on the service persists.

Nintendo Switch Online Mega Multiplayer Festival

The PMD: Red Rescue Team announcement coincides with Nintendo's Mega Multiplayer Festival, running until September 8th. This event includes a special offer: purchase a 12-month Nintendo Switch Online membership and receive two extra months free! Additional bonuses include extra Gold Points on eligible game purchases (August 5th-18th) and free multiplayer game trials (August 19th-25th; specific titles TBA). A Nintendo Mega Multiplayer game sale will follow from August 26th to September 8th, 2024.
