Following his critically acclaimed gothic horror film Nosferatu, director Robert Eggers is set to bring his distinctive vision to a sequel of Jim Henson's 1986 fantasy classic Labyrinth. The original film starred David Bowie as the iconic Goblin King and Jennifer Connelly as a young woman navigating a mystical realm to save her brother.
A New Chapter for the Fantasy Cult Classic
According to Variety, Eggers will both write and direct the long-awaited sequel, collaborating with Sjón, his co-writer on The Northman. This development comes after years of stalled attempts to revive the franchise – including an abandoned sequel effort by Sinister director Scott Derrickson.
The 1986 original captivated audiences with its unique blend of practical puppetry and dark fantasy, following Connelly's character Sarah as she ventures through a surreal labyrinth to rescue her baby brother from Bowie's seductive yet sinister Goblin King.
Eggers' Packed Development Slate
Beyond the Labyrinth sequel, Eggers has already started work on Werwulf, a historical werewolf film set in 13th century England with dialogue delivered in Old English. Scheduled for Christmas 2026, the project continues Eggers' fascination with period-accurate horror.
This announcement follows the critical success of Eggers' Nosferatu remake, which landed four Oscar nominations including Best Cinematography. His atmospheric reinterpretation of the Dracula-inspired tale featured haunting visuals and starred Bill Skarsgård as the chilling vampire Count Orlok.
Fans of practical effects and gothic horror can look forward to seeing Eggers' distinctive directorial style applied to Henson's beloved fantasy universe when the Labyrinth sequel eventually arrives in theaters.
