IGN's exclusive first look at the 2018 live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie generated mixed reactions, with fans focusing on aspects like Sonic's teeth, physique, and unusual fingers. Director Jeff Fowler subsequently redesigned the character, resulting in a much more positive reception.
While the response to Shrek's new look isn't as intensely negative as Sonic's initial design, Sonic's playful commentary amused fans. Comments included, "You know it's bad when you see the Sonic Movie account giving Shrek 5 advice," and "No way they actually posted this 😭".
First announced in 2016, Shrek 5's development was confirmed by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri in 2023, along with hints at a Donkey spin-off. Universal Pictures shifted Shrek 5's release date to December 23, 2026, moving the Minions 3 release to fill the original Shrek 5 slot.
