Sony has officially announced that Ghost of Yōtei, the highly anticipated sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, will launch on October 2, 2025, exclusively for PlayStation 5. Alongside this exciting news, a new trailer has been released, introducing the Yōtei Six—the gang members that protagonist Atsu is determined to hunt down—and showcasing a novel gameplay mechanic that allows players to "glimpse Atsu’s past and understand everything that was taken from her."
In a detailed post on the PlayStation Blog, Sucker Punch's senior communications manager, Andrew Goldfarb, provided insights into the game's gripping narrative. Set 16 years ago in the heart of Ezo (present-day Hokkaido), the story follows Atsu, who seeks vengeance against the Yōtei Six for the brutal murder of her family and her near-death experience. Left for dead and pinned to a burning ginkgo tree, Atsu miraculously survived and has since honed her skills to become a formidable hunter. Returning home, she is armed with the same katana that was once used against her, driven by a list of six names: The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and Lord Saito. As Atsu pursues these targets, her journey evolves from mere revenge to a deeper quest for purpose, aided by unexpected allies she encounters across Ezo.
Ghost of Yōtei comes to PS5 on 2nd October.

Sony's decision to release Ghost of Yōtei in October places it in direct competition with the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, expected to launch in the fall of 2025. However, with Rockstar yet to confirm a specific release date, Sony has chosen to move forward with its announcement. The trailer offers a mix of cinematic storytelling and gameplay, showcasing the stunning environments of Ezo, Atsu’s horseback journeys, and intense combat sequences.
Sucker Punch aims to enhance player agency in Ghost of Yōtei, allowing for more control over Atsu’s narrative compared to its predecessor. Creative director Jason Connell emphasized the team's efforts to address the repetitive nature of open-world games by introducing unique experiences throughout Ezo. Players will have the freedom to choose which member of the Yōtei Six to pursue first, track other dangerous targets for bounties, and learn new combat skills from weapon sensei.

Goldfarb described Ezo as a wild and deadly yet beautiful landscape, where players can encounter both dangers and peaceful moments. The game retains some activities from Ghost of Tsushima, and players can build campfires anywhere in the open world for a moment of respite under the stars. New weapon types introduced include the ōdachi, kusarigama, and dual katanas, promising varied combat experiences. The game also boasts "massive sightlines that let you look far across the environment, skies of twinkling stars and auroras, and vegetation that sways believably in the wind," with enhanced performance and visuals on the PlayStation 5 Pro.
