Netflix Games' Squid Game: Unleashed Gets a Release Date and a New Trailer
Squid Game: Unleashed, the upcoming mobile adaptation exclusive to Netflix Games, has a release date: December 17th. A new trailer showcases the violent, yet arguably humorous, gameplay.
Netflix's track record with adaptations of its original series is mixed. While some, like the Stranger Things pixel-art adventure, have been successful, others haven't resonated as widely. However, Squid Game: Unleashed aims to capture the action and violence that made the original series a global phenomenon.
The game pits players against friends and strangers in the iconic, deadly games from the show, adding a playful twist. Whether this approach is successful remains to be seen, but it clearly leverages the original's popularity.
Featuring both familiar and new scenarios, Squid Game: Unleashed could be a significant win for Netflix. Its release just before Season 2 of the show (December 26th) is strategic. Pre-registration is available now for iOS and Android.
CalamariThe irony of a show about dehumanization and the exploitation of death for entertainment being adapted into a multiplayer battle game is undeniable. However, from a purely objective standpoint, it's a logical move. Netflix seems to have recognized the potential of a dedicated multiplayer audience to retain subscribers, even if some streaming content doesn't appeal to everyone.
In the meantime, check out other recent releases, such as Honey Grove, a relaxing gardening simulator, which received a positive review from Jack Brassel.
