Superman's Face Flies IRL in Gunn's DCU

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addresses online criticism regarding Superman's expression during a flight sequence in a recently released TV spot.

A new 30-second promotional video showcased scenes of Lex Luthor near the Fortress of Solitude and Superman performing a barrel roll during flight. The Superman scene sparked debate, with some viewers commenting on the apparent stillness of his face despite the movement of his hair and cape. Speculation arose about potential CGI issues.

However, Gunn clarified on Threads that the shot contains "absolutely zero CG in his face," attributing the perceived unnatural look to the close-up wide-angle lens used and emphasizing that both the Svalbard location and David Corenswet's performance were entirely practical. Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago, served as a filming location for the movie.

Despite Gunn's explanation, online discussion persists, with comparisons drawn to the flight sequences of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (also directed by Gunn). Nevertheless, excitement for the Superman film remains high.

Superman is slated for release on July 11, 2025, marking the inaugural film of the DCU's "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters." Further information is available on various DC heroes and villains featured in the trailer, James Gunn's comments on Krypto's portrayal, the film's thematic focus on hope, and more.
