Switch 2 Features New Controller Functions

New Patent For Joy-Con Shows Mouse Support

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

The Switch 2 introduces groundbreaking features for its Joy-Con controllers, notably including mouse-like functionality. The patent reveals that the Joy-Con can detect movement over a surface, transforming it into a mouse-like device. This feature was hinted at in the Switch 2 reveal trailer, where the Joy-Con was seen being dragged across a surface, suggesting its potential as a mouse.

While Nintendo has remained largely silent on the specifics of the Switch 2, this patent solidifies the rumors surrounding the Joy-Con's new capabilities.

Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Function and New Controllers

The Switch 2's Joy-Con retains the detachable design familiar to Nintendo Switch users, but with a significant twist: the ability to function as a mouse. According to the patent, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."

In addition to the mouse functionality, the Joy-Con can be charged using a new dock capable of charging two Joy-Cons simultaneously. A magnetic attachment that includes a wrist strap, similar to the original Joy-Con, connects the controller to the console.

The patent also introduces a new pair of controllers, resembling a standard controller split in half. Each half features an optical sensor on the side, enabling mouse-like functionality. An additional attachment allows these controllers to be combined into a standard controller.

It's important to note that these features, as described in the patent, may not all be included in the final product. Nintendo has yet to make official announcements regarding the Joy-Con's functions or other related accessories for the Switch 2.
