SwitchArcade Round-Up: Reviews Featuring ‘Ace Attorney Investigations Collection’, Plus New Releases and Sales

Author : Thomas Feb 26,2025

Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 4th, 2024! Summer's over, but we made some great memories. I'm feeling a bit wiser, and grateful for the journey with you all. Here's to a fantastic new season! Today's article is packed with reviews, new releases, and sales – let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances at some classic games. Now, the Ace Attorney game that eluded localization arrives with the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection, featuring Miles Edgeworth's adventures. This sequel cleverly builds on previous storylines, enhancing the original. Playing as Edgeworth offers a fresh perspective from the prosecution's side.

While the core mechanics remain similar – searching for clues, questioning witnesses – the unique presentation and Edgeworth's character add a distinct flavor. The pacing can feel less structured than other Ace Attorney titles, but fans will appreciate this sub-series. The second game significantly improves upon the first, making the original's shortcomings more understandable.

Bonus features include a gallery with art and music, a story mode, and the option to switch between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A dialog history feature is a welcome addition.

The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection offers a compelling contrast between the two games. The official localization of the second game is fantastic, and the extra features make it a complete package. With this release, almost every Ace Attorney game is now available on Switch. If you've enjoyed the series, this is a must-have.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to Gimmick! is unexpected, but here it is! Developed by Bitwave Games, this sequel faithfully recreates the original's challenging physics-based platforming. Six lengthy levels will test your skills. An easier mode is included for those seeking a less demanding experience.

The protagonist's star attack remains central to gameplay, serving as a weapon and puzzle-solving tool. Collectibles offer customization options, rewarding players for completing difficult sections. The game is challenging, but generous checkpoints prevent excessive frustration. The charming visuals and music help maintain a positive atmosphere.

While not overly long, the difficulty remains high. Mastering platforming and utilizing the star effectively are crucial for progress. Gimmick! 2 is a successful sequel, building upon the original without losing its identity. Fans of the original and challenging platformers will find it rewarding. However, those seeking a casual experience should proceed with caution.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platformer style to a shoot 'em up similar to Lords of Thunder. Surprisingly, it works well, though the Switch's hardware sometimes struggles to deliver optimal performance. The intense action, soundtrack, and visuals remain engaging despite the limitations.

Weapon management is key. The main gun depletes energy, requiring use of the melee weapon to recharge. A third rotating weapon adds strategic depth. Mastering weapon cycling and the dash maneuver is essential for survival.

While different from the first game, Valfaris: Mecha Therion retains a similar atmosphere. It's a stylish heavy metal shoot 'em up that avoids common genre pitfalls. Performance may be better on other platforms, but the Switch version is still playable.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

Licensed games often cater to fans. Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash delivers ample fan service, excelling in its presentation of the source material. The writing is well-done, and the meta-systems reward dedicated fans.

However, non-fans may find limited appeal. The mini-games are repetitive, and the story will resonate primarily with those familiar with Umamusume. Even fans might find the game's focus misplaced, despite its strong presentation and unlockable content.

While visually appealing and offering a wealth of unlockables, Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash lacks longevity, especially for those unfamiliar with the franchise.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

Sunsoft is known for its charming 8-bit games in Japan. Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection introduces three such titles to Western audiences: Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three are fully localized, a significant achievement.

The collection includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries. The games vary in quality. 53 Stations is frustrating but charming, Ripple Island is a solid adventure game, and The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but inconsistent. None are top-tier NES games, but none are outright bad.

Fans of Sunsoft and obscure NES titles will appreciate this collection. The careful handling of these games and their first-time English localization make it worthwhile.
