Top GBA & DS Games Hit the Switch!

Author : Ethan Jan 24,2025

A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles now available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While the Switch Online app boasts a robust Game Boy Advance library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the eShop. Ten standout games are featured: four Game Boy Advance and six Nintendo DS.

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. Although the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA port offers a solid and enjoyable experience. A worthwhile play, particularly for comparing versions, and surprisingly accessible even for non-shooter enthusiasts.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

While the Mega Man X console series faltered, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA as a true successor. This side-scrolling action title initiates an excellent series, albeit with some initial rough edges that are refined in later installments. A perfect starting point for exploring the franchise.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry, justified by its distinct gameplay from Mega Man Zero. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy, set within a clever virtual world concept. While later entries see diminishing returns, the original offers considerable fun.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

From the Castlevania Advance Collection, Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it rivals even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages engaging gameplay, enhanced by a unique setting and hidden secrets. A top-tier third-party GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

Originally a cult classic with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge gained wider recognition on DSiWare. This title solidified Shantae's popularity, leading to continued appearances across console generations. Interestingly, its origins trace back to an unreleased GBA game, soon to receive its own release.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA game in origin (though unlocalized initially), Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game sets a high standard, though later installments are also highly regarded.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick features compelling writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, players use abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of their own death. A captivating and rewarding experience.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS title, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS. A remarkable game in every aspect.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

From the Castlevania Dominus Collection, Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls over its original touch controls. However, all three DS Castlevania games in this collection are highly recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

While the Etrian Odyssey series is intrinsically linked to the DS/3DS, this Switch port offers a playable experience. Each game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most rewarding of the three.
