Localthunk, the developer behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, intervened in a dispute on the game's subreddit concerning a moderator's stance on AI-generated art. The former moderator, DrTankHead, had initially stated that AI art would be permitted on both the main and NSFW Balatro subreddits, provided it was properly attributed and tagged. This statement, however, contradicted Localthunk's and publisher Playstack's views.

Localthunk swiftly responded on Bluesky, clarifying that neither they nor Playstack endorsed AI-generated imagery. A subsequent statement on the subreddit confirmed DrTankHead's removal from the moderation team and a ban on AI-generated images going forward. The developer emphasized their opposition to AI art, citing its potential harm to artists. The team plans to update the subreddit's rules and FAQ to reflect this change.

Playstack's communications director acknowledged that the previous subreddit rules, which prohibited "unlabeled AI content," were unclear and could have been misinterpreted. The remaining moderators are working to clarify the rules to avoid future confusion.

DrTankHead, in a post on the NSFW Balatro subreddit, acknowledged their removal and stated that while they didn't intend to make the subreddit AI-centric, they were considering a schedule where non-NSFW AI-generated art could be posted on specific days. This suggestion was met with a user's suggestion that DrTankHead take a break from Reddit.

The debate surrounding AI art highlights a broader industry-wide discussion. The video game industry, having recently experienced significant layoffs, is grappling with the implications of generative AI. Keywords Studios' failed experiment in creating an entirely AI-driven game underscores the limitations of current AI technology in replacing human talent. Despite this, major players like EA, Capcom, and Activision are actively exploring and implementing AI in various aspects of game development, even amidst criticism and controversies, such as Activision's use of AI in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which sparked a backlash.
