Following the exciting reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2, it's clear that the strong partnership between Nintendo and Xbox is set to continue. Phil Spencer, Microsoft's head of gaming, has reaffirmed his commitment to the Switch platform, highlighting it as a vital way for Xbox to connect with gamers who don't use Xbox or PC.
In a recent interview with Variety, Spencer was asked about specific projects planned for the Nintendo Switch 2. He emphasized that, just as Xbox has supported the original Switch, they are eager to extend this support to the Switch 2.
"Nintendo has been a fantastic partner. It provides us with a unique opportunity to reach players who aren’t on PC or Xbox," Spencer explained. "This collaboration helps us grow our community and keep our franchises alive and thriving, which is crucial for our ongoing investment in game development."
"I’m a firm believer in the value that Nintendo brings to the gaming industry, and I’m committed to supporting them," Spencer added. "Their support for our franchises is a key part of our future strategy."
Spencer has consistently praised the innovation behind the Nintendo Switch 2, especially around the time of its initial teaser. He confirmed that Xbox aims to bring more of its games to a broader range of platforms, including PlayStation, Steam, and Nintendo's consoles.
When Variety inquired if the Switch 2 reveal had spurred Xbox to announce new developments in their console lineup, Spencer remained focused on community and player engagement. "No. I think all of us in this industry should prioritize our communities and the player base we're building," he stated. "While I find inspiration in what others do, I have full confidence in our current plans."
Reiterating Xbox's commitment, Spencer highlighted their goal to make their games accessible "in as many places as possible," across cloud, PC, and consoles. Titles like Pentiment and Obsidian's Grounded have already made their way to Nintendo platforms, and it will be fascinating to see what Xbox brings to the Switch 2 once it officially launches.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for its official debut on June 5, 2025. While pre-orders are not yet available, keep an eye on our Switch 2 pre-order hub page for the latest updates on when you can secure your console.
