Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a playable Baldur's Gate 4.
A Playable, Yet Abandoned, Baldur's Gate 4
Larian CEO Swen Vincke, in a PC Gamer interview, confirmed the existence of a playable Baldur's Gate 4 prototype. While acknowledging it was a game fans "would have liked," the team decided against further development. The reasons cited were the extensive time commitment (potentially another three years) and a desire to pursue original projects. The team felt the need to move beyond the D&D IP after years of development.
A Shift in Focus and High Morale
The decision to abandon BG4, along with planned BG3 DLC, was met with positive internal response. Vincke highlighted the increased morale and excitement stemming from the freedom to pursue new, original ideas. The studio is now concentrating on two undisclosed projects, described as their most ambitious yet.
The Future Beyond Baldur's Gate
With the D&D projects on hold, speculation points towards a new entry in Larian's Divinity series. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 has been hinted at, Vincke assures fans the next Divinity game will be unexpected. The final major patch for Baldur's Gate 3, including mod support, cross-play, and new endings, is expected in Fall 2024.
