Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!
The highly anticipated Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 has arrived, and the player response has been phenomenal, especially regarding the modding scene. The sheer volume of mods is staggering.
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke highlighted the impact, stating on Twitter (X) that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of the September 5th release. This was further amplified by Scott Reismanis, founder of ModDB and mod.io, who reported that the number has already surpassed three million installs and is rapidly increasing.
Patch 7's success is fueled by several key factors: the introduction of new content (including sinister endings and revamped split-screen), and, crucially, Larian's own integrated Mod Manager. This in-game tool simplifies browsing, installing, and managing community-created mods.
Developers provide modding tools (available separately via Steam) utilizing their Osiris scripting language. Modders can create custom narratives, implement scripts, and debug, publishing directly from the toolkit.
Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon
PC Gamer noted a community-developed "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) that unlocks a level editor and reactivates previously restricted features in Larian's editor. While Larian initially limited tool access, focusing on game development rather than tool creation, they're now actively pursuing cross-platform modding.
Vincke confirmed Larian's commitment to cross-platform modding, acknowledging the complexity of making it work seamlessly across PC and consoles. The PC version will lead the way, with console support following after addressing potential issues.
Beyond modding, Patch 7 includes UI improvements, animations, dialogue additions, bug fixes, and performance enhancements. With more updates planned, the future of Baldur's Gate 3 modding looks incredibly bright.
