Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: A Turn-Based RPG Inspired by Classics
Sandfall Interactive's upcoming turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is generating significant excitement. Drawing inspiration from the Belle Epoque era of France and classic JRPGs, the game uniquely blends turn-based combat with real-time elements.
The game's creative director, Guillaume Broche, recently discussed the game's influences, citing Atlus' Persona and Square Enix's Octopath Traveler as stylistic inspirations. However, Broche emphasized a stronger influence from the Final Fantasy series, particularly entries 8, 9, and 10, stating that the game reflects his personal tastes cultivated from playing these titles. While acknowledging the inspiration, he stressed that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not a direct imitation but a unique creation.
Combat features real-time reactions within a turn-based framework. Players issue commands, but must also react swiftly to enemy attacks. This dynamic system draws comparisons to Persona, Final Fantasy, and Sea of Stars.
The game's open world allows for seamless party member switching and the use of unique traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. Broche expressed a desire for players to experiment with character builds and combinations, encouraging creative gameplay.
The narrative centers on preventing the Paintress from unleashing death through her art, with unique environments, such as the gravity-defying Flying Waters, adding to the game's distinctive atmosphere.
The development team aims to create a game that resonates with players in the same way classic titles impacted their lives. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
