Cyberpunk 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 Switch 2 Port Updates
Featuring Multiple Cities
Cyberpunk 2077's eagerly awaited sequel, codenamed Project Orion, is set to expand the game's universe beyond Night City. During the Digital Dragons 2025 event on May 20, R. Talsorian Games' founder and game designer Mike Pondsmith provided insights into the sequel's development.
Although Pondsmith's involvement is less extensive than with the original game, he remains closely connected to the project. He shared, "I see the scripts. Last week I was wandering around talking to different departments and seeing what they had like, ‘this is the new Cyberware, what do you think?’"
He also revealed that alongside Night City, a new cityscape inspired by a dystopian version of Chicago is in the works. "I remember looking at it and going, ‘I understand the feel that you’re going for, and this really does work, it doesn’t feel like Blade Runner, it feels more like Chicago gone wrong’. And I said, ‘yeah, I can see this working’," Pondsmith noted.
CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has been actively recruiting for Cyberpunk 2, with a recent job listing for a Lead Encounter Designer aimed at crafting groundbreaking gameplay experiences. The role involves "helping formulate solutions for and help create memorable gameplay encounters that will thrill and excite our players."
A key aspect of this position is collaborating with the systems design team to develop "the most realistic and reactive crowd system in any game to date." Though details on Project Orion are scarce, the involvement of Pondsmith and CDPR's search for top talent suggest that Cyberpunk 2 will enhance the immersive world-building and narrative depth of its predecessor.
New Footage for Cyberpunk 2077 Switch 2 Port
In other news, CDPR has shared new footage of Cyberpunk 2077's Switch 2 port, highlighting the studio's efforts to optimize the game for Nintendo's upcoming handheld console. The B-roll videos, totaling around 37 minutes, are available on CDPR's website.
Reports from Nintendo Switch 2 showcase events in New York and Paris earlier this year indicated performance challenges, particularly with frame drops. Business Insider noted, "Such an intensive game playing on the Switch 2 is a fun novelty, but this definitely isn't the best way to play CyberPunk. I encountered lots of frame drops."
However, CDPR Engineer Tim Green expressed satisfaction with the port's progress in an interview with Game File on April 25. He stated, "We haven’t had to fight with fitting into memory, and the speed of the data storage has helped alleviate some of those early streaming problems. This has allowed us to focus our attention on improving other things, and we’re very happy with the result."
