God of War Ragnarok's PC Steam release has ignited a firestorm of controversy, resulting in a "Mixed" user review score. The culprit? Sony's controversial requirement for a PlayStation Network (PSN) account to play the single-player title.
Review Bombing Over PSN Requirement
The game, launched last week, currently holds a 6/10 rating on Steam, largely due to a wave of negative reviews from disgruntled fans. Many feel the PSN requirement is an unnecessary intrusion on a single-player experience.
While numerous negative reviews cite the PSN requirement as the primary reason for their low score, some players report successfully playing the game without linking an account. One review states, "I understand the PSN anger; it's frustrating. But I played fine without logging in. It's a shame; these reviews will deter people from an amazing game."
Another review highlights technical issues potentially linked to the PSN requirement: "The PSN requirement ruined the experience. The game got stuck on a black screen after login, yet it registered 1 hour 40 minutes of playtime – absurd!"
Positive Reviews Amidst the Backlash
Despite the negative reviews, positive feedback exists, praising the game's story and gameplay. Many positive reviewers attribute the negative scores solely to Sony's controversial PSN decision. One player wrote, "Great story, as expected. The negative reviews are mostly about the PSN. Sony needs to address this; otherwise, the PC port is excellent."
Déjà Vu for Sony
This isn't Sony's first rodeo. A similar backlash occurred with Helldivers 2, also requiring a PSN account. Following significant player outcry, Sony reversed its decision. Whether they will do the same for God of War Ragnarok remains to be seen.
