Insomniac Games Eyes More Game-to-Screen Adaptations Following CEO's Retirement
Insomniac Games, renowned for its Ratchet & Clank franchise, has signaled its strong interest in further game-to-screen adaptations. This revelation emerged from an interview with co-Studio Head Ryan Schneider in Variety following the announcement of founder and CEO Ted Price's retirement.
Schneider highlighted the studio's prior experience with the 2016 Ratchet & Clank film, stating, "We kind of got an early start on that. So, of course, we’re interested in that kind of thing. We love Ratchet and Clank in particular." While the 2016 film received mixed reviews, Insomniac's confidence in future adaptations is bolstered by Sony's recent successes in video game adaptations, notably the critically acclaimed The Last of Us series.
Sony's Successful Track Record in Game Adaptations
Insomniac's enthusiasm aligns with Sony's proven success in translating its game properties to film and television. Recent triumphs include the 2022 Uncharted film and the 2023 The Last of Us series. Further solidifying their commitment, Sony's CES 2025 press conference unveiled a robust pipeline of upcoming adaptations:
- The Last of Us Season 2 (HBO, April 2025)
- Until Dawn live-action film (April 2025)
- Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime series (Crunchyroll, 2027)
- Helldivers feature film (release date unannounced)
- Horizon Zero Dawn live-action film (release date unannounced)
Insomniac Founder Ted Price Retires After 30 Years
The interview with Insomniac's co-Studio Heads coincided with the announcement of Ted Price's retirement after three decades at the helm. Price, instrumental in building Insomniac's legacy with franchises like Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Marvel's Spider-Man, stated that his decision, made last year, was driven by a desire to allow new leadership to guide the studio's future.
The reins are now held by three veteran Insomniac employees: Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern, and Jen Huang, who will serve as co-Studio Heads. Price expressed confidence in their ability to continue the studio's success, emphasizing their deep understanding of Insomniac's culture and processes.
