Respawn Cancels Multiplayer FPS Project Quietly

Author : Joshua May 16,2025

Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has canceled an unannounced incubation project, resulting in layoffs of an unspecified number of team members involved. This information was initially reported by Insider Gaming, referencing a now-deleted LinkedIn post by a former production coordinator who mentioned the cancellation and their subsequent job search.

IGN has independently verified the project's cancellation, identifying it as a multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS). This project was developed by a team that previously worked on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, sources have described it as "small." Additionally, at least one individual associated with the project has confirmed on LinkedIn that their departure was voluntary.

This development is part of a broader pattern of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring within Electronic Arts (EA). The trend began in 2023 with the elimination of 50 positions at BioWare and an unknown number at Codemasters. Nearly a year ago, EA laid off 670 employees company-wide and canceled several projects, including the Star Wars FPS, affecting around two dozen Respawn employees. Since then, BioWare has undergone restructuring, with developers reassigned to other projects and further layoffs of key personnel.

IGN has sought comment from Electronic Arts regarding these developments.
