The new Street Fighter movie has found its director – or shall we say, its "challenger."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kitao Sakurai – writer, director, and executive producer of the surreal comedy series The Eric Andre Show – will helm Legendary Entertainment's upcoming Street Fighter film adaptation.
Capcom is reportedly "deeply involved" in the adaptation, which already has a scheduled release date of March 20, 2026.
This marks Hollywood's latest attempt to bring Street Fighter to theaters, though fans will never forget the cult classic 1994 version starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the legendary Raul Julia as M. Bison – a cinematic gem despite its initial critical reception.
Casting details remain under wraps, but fans can likely expect appearances from several iconic fighters from the game series.
The project originally had Talk to Me directors Danny and Michael Philippou attached before their departure last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests Legendary might be pursuing a more absurd, comedic tone for the adaptation. For fans who appreciate Street Fighter's more exaggerated elements, this could be an exciting direction.
While waiting for the film, players can enjoy the latest installment – Street Fighter 6 – which recently added Mai Shiranui to its roster. Read our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review for more details.
